The Thespian Family Theatre and Productions presents The Trials of Brother Jero.
The Trials of Brother Jero is about a fake beach prophet, a suave fraudster who establishes a viable ‘business’ out of gullible working class people in the vicinity. In a turn of events, Chume a messenger who seeks career advancement and relief from his shrewish wife Amope (a market woman to whom Jero owes money), gets irked by Jero’s audacious relationship with his wife.
Whilst depicted by the imagery of a beach preacher, this play is a light satiric comedy that aims at showing how hypocrisy and manipulation in various spheres of life e.g. political, social and religious, have enslaved even the enlightened, and enriched charlatans. Many have been defrauded by those held in awe and esteem by virtue of their office , position or responsibility.
‘Jero’ who typifies a person, an order or a system, is the master of manipulation, and as is typical, is able to keep ‘his’ followers in a subservient position because he understands what they long for – money, social status and power.
The Trials of Brother Jero is one Wole Soyinka’s best known humorous plays and the rib cracking production will presented on July 19th, August 9th and 16th, 2014 by 3:00p.m and 6:00p.m. On July 19th, 2014 the performance will hold at Freedom Park, Lagos while on August 9th and 16th, 2014 the venue will be at Terra Kulture, VI, Lagos.
