In the early and late 90s, Nollywood home videos really caught our attention. Not only did Nollywood build our interest in seeing Nigerian movies, it paved way for business owners to own video clubs and make money each time a new movie was released then.
Also, our favorite and experienced Nollywood actors were younger then and they seemed to be the only ones we wanted to watch. NollySilverScreen brings to you in no particular order, 11 movies from that time, which was on the lips of everyone back then.
1.Saworoide
Directed by Tunde Kelani in 1999, Saworoide tells the story of the town of Jogbo, where things stopped being the same when a king breaks the tradition. The king decided to enrich himself and neglect his people. Decades later he was overthrowned by a soldier.
However,unknown to them, the true heir to the crown is on his way back to Jogbo with the sacred drum that will reset all past mistakes.
The movie features: Ayantunji Amoo, Kunle Bamtefa, Kayode Olaiya, Yemi Shodimu, Kola Oyewo, Lere Paimo, Bukky Wright, Khabirat Kafidipe, Kunle Afolayan and others.
2. koseegbe
Directed by Tunde Kelani in 1995, Koseegbe tells the story of Mako a decent customs officer who decided to wage war against corruption and fraud.
That decision earned him lots of enemies. The movie stars: Kola Oyewo, Wole Amele, Jide Kosoko and Toyin A Babatope.
3. Died Wretched
Directed by Kenneth Nnebue in 1997, Died Wretched tells the story of Chris.
This tragic story is about how a millionaire, Chris neglected his uncle Lucas who trained him but later became poor and homeless. Unfortunately,uncle Lucas dies in penury and his cousin ironically buries him in a N2.5m casket.
The movie features – Tony Umez, Eucharia Anunobi, Rachel Oniga, Tom Njemaze and others.
4. Full Moon
Directed by Chico Ejiro, Full moon tells the story of a possessed and special teenager whose prowess is discovered when she was about to be sacrificed by cannibals. This movie features Regina Askia, Pete Edochie, Sola Fosudo and many more.
5. Diamond Ring
Directed by Tade Ogidan in 1998, Diamond Ring tells the scary story of a spoilt brat by the name of Chidi, who is sent to a University quite early by his parents. When he is on campus he joins a gang who later rob a mortuary. Unknown to Chidi and his gang members, the stolen goods have grave consequences.
The movie stars: Liz Benson, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Bimbo Akintola, Bukky Ajayi, Tunji Bamishigbin, Sola Sobowale, Teju Gbade-Oyelakin and more.
6. Igodo
Directed by Andy Amaechi in 1999, Igodo was regarded as the best epic movie of the home video era, Igodo is the story of seven brave warriors who were sent on a dangerous journey to an enchanted land to get what would save their village from a deadly curse.
The movie stars : Sam Dede, Amaechi Muonagor, Charles Okafor, Prince James Uche, Pete Edochie, Norbert Young among others.
7.Out of Bounds
Directed by Tade Ogidan in 1997, Out of Bounds, tells the story of a Pastor who is the target of two women who are hell-bent on sleeping with him. The Pastor steps out of his marriage and finds himself in a web of lies and deceit which ruins him. The movie stars top actors Richard Mofe Damijo, Bimbo Akintola, Rachael Oniga, Steve Rhodes, among others.
8.Madam Dearest
Directed by Tade Ogidan in 2006, Madam Dearest is a Yoruba movie about Bukky whose husband was jailed for life. Due to family pressure, she moved on with her life and had a son for a Ghananian who is one of her husband`s employees. Her husband, Biodun, was later exonerated and released from jail only three years into his jail term.
In her confusion, Bukky tells her husband that he is the father of her son. The world of the employee crumbles and he decides to elope with his child.
The movie features: Deji Adenuga, Kareem Adepoju, Opeyemi Ayeola Lanre Balogun, Akin Lewis, Lere Paimo ,Yemi Solade and many more.
9.Suicide Mission
Directed by Fred Amata in 1998, Suicide Mission tells the story of a seductress, Monique who comes in between Austin and his wife Winnie. She uses spiritual means to control Austin, spiritually keeping him in a bottle.
The movie features: Richard Mofe- Damijo, Regina Askia, Ameze Imarhiagbe, Obot Etuk, Patrick Doyle, Peter Bunor Jr. among others.
10. Hostages
Directed by Tade Ogidan in 1997, hostages tells the story of a poor man’s son who had to face series of challenges and suffering because he fell in love with the daughter of a rich man. The movie is full of action, suspense and stunts.
The movie stars, Tope Idowu, Ofuafo Otomewo, Richard Mofe Damijo, Bimbo Manuel, Lanre Slogan, Tunji Sotimirin and Bukky Ajayi.
11. Most Wanted
Directed by Tunji Bamishigbin in 1998, Most Wanted tells the story of a group of unemployed ladies, who decided to rob to disguised as men, to make money. This gives the police a hard time trying to track them down as they were on the lookout for male robbers. The movie gets a lot more interesting when one of the girls falls in love with the policeman who was in charge of the investigation.
The criminals on many occasions get away, however during their last robbery they were all killed, except for Askia’s character who was caught while trying to leave the country.
