The Surreal16 Collective and A Whitespace Creative Agency are set to host the first edition of their film festival, the S16 Film Festival, this December.

According to the organisers, “The festival will be a celebration of cinema as an art form. It aims to foster and share our passion for cinema, with a lineup of films from exciting and unique voices.”

The S16 Film Festival will hold on December 10 – 11, 2021, at 9 Broad Street, (Former Federal Printing Press), Lagos Island. Twelve films will be screened at the festival including Juju Stories and You Will Die At 20, which are the opening and closing films respectively.

Juju Stories is an award-winning three-part anthology film that explores magical realism rooted in Nigerian folklore. It stars Timini Egbuson, Elvis Poko, Don Ekwuazi, Nengi Adoki, Bukola Oladipupo, Belinda Agedah Yanga and Paul Utomi. Juju Stories is produced by Oge Obasi and directed by Michael Omonua, Abba T. Makama and C.J “Fiery” Obasi. Watch the trailer here.

You Will Die At 20 is a 2019 Sudanese film directed by Amjad Abu Alala. It follows the story of Sakina and her son, Muzamil. During Muzamil’s naming ceremony, a sheikh predicts that he will die at the age of 20. Haunted by this prophecy, Sakina becomes overly protective of Muzamil, who grows up knowing about his fate. As Muzamil escapes Sakina’s ever-watchful eye, he encounters friends, ideas and challenges that make him question his destiny. Watch the trailer below.

Other films to be screened at the inaugural S16 Film Festival include Afronauts, Dear Black Child, Husbandry, The Other Side, Rehearsal, Ojo Aiku, Appreciation and Nightmare on BroadStreet.
