AY Makun’s comedy drama, Christmas in Miami, has maintained its top position on the Nigerian box office. According to data released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) for the period 31 December 2021 to 6 January 2022, the film’s earning currently stands at over 205 million naira.
Christmas in Miami has been on a winning streak since it first premiered in cinemas on 24 December 2021. In just five days of its release (24 – 28 December 2021), it raked in a whopping 100,714,675 naira, beating Aki and Pawpaw which had just been released one week earlier to the top of the box office chart. By 31 December, it had earned 134.54 million naira, jostling Toyin Abraham’s The Ghost and the Tout Too with 134.46 million naira total earnings from its position as the highest grossing movie of 2021.
Even though the movie has been met with mixed reviews, its top earnings is not surprising as over the years Nigerians have shown a penchant for comedy dramas. If you doubt this, you only need to look at both the movies that topped the box office list in 2021 and the highest grossing Nigerian titles over the years. In 2021, Christmas in Miami, The Ghost and the Tout Too, The Prophetess, My Village People and Aki and Pawpaw were the top five highest grossing films and what they have in common is that they are all comedy dramas.
To buttress the above, Ome Ghetto: The Saga (2020), The Wedding Party 1 & 2 (2016 and 2017), Chief Daddy (2018) and Sugar Rush (2019) are the top five highest grossing Nollywood titles of all times and they are all comedies.
Needless to say that this fourth installment in the Akpos adventure series has already broken the record set by the three previous installments in the series. 30 Days in Atlanta (2014) earned 163,351,300, A Trip to Jamaica (2016) earned 180,264,964 and 10 Days in Suncity (2017) grossed 176,705,669 naira at the box office.
Congratulations to AY Makun and we look forward to seeing what the total earnings for Christmas in Miami ends up to be.
