Countdown to the 16th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Award started last week with the release of the nominee list by the Chairman of the jury. The nominee list saw Nollywood movies, actors, and producers nominated in 23 out of the 26 award categories. While we look forward to the final unveil of winners on the 27th of October, we bring you a closer look at some of the award category and the Nollywood movies nominated for them.

Hello, Rain – EFERE OZAKO AWARD FOR BEST SHORT FILM

Hello, Rain (2018) was nominated for the Efere Ozako Award for Best Short Film. This film is a Nigerian adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor’s science and witchcraft-themed novel Hello, Moto. Hello, Rain is about three scientist witches who through a combination of juju and technology create magical wigs that grant them untold supernatural powers. Hello, Rain was directed by C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi and stars Keira Hewatch, Tunde Aladese, and Ogee Nelson and a host of others.  

Skin – AMAA 2019 AWARD FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY

Beverly Naya’s Skin got the nomination for best documentary.  Skin, set in present day Lagos, is an exploration of the contrasting perceptions of beauty. Feauring interviews from a representative audience including school children, traders, artists, beauty entrepreneurs and sex workers, Skin is an attempt to get people to embrace themselves just the way they are. The documentary was part of the official selection at the just-concluded Urban World Film Festival in New York City.

Make Room – OUSMANE SEMBENE AMAA 2019 AWARD FOR BEST FILM IN AN AFRICAN LANGUAGE

Against the backdrop of terrorism raging in the Northern part of Nigeria, Make Room tells the story of  Salma, a bright and promising girl who was abducted by insurgents alongside 245 other girls from her school. The movie essentially tells the story of the Chibok girls and was directed by Robert Peters, and executive produced by Rogers Ofime. Shot in Hausa language, Make Room stars Asabe Madaki, Abba Ali Zaki, Jamila Yahaya Ibrahim, and many others.

The Delivery Boy – AMAA 2019 AWARD FOR BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN PRODUCTION DESIGN

Something Unusual Studios wowed viewers with the production design of The Delivery Boy. The Delivery Boy is a thriller written and directed by ace filmmaker Adekunle Adejuyigbe. The movie stars Jammal Ibrahim, Jemima Osunde, Charles Etubieibi, Kehinde Fasuyi, and a host of others. The Delivery Boy won the award for ‘Best Nigerian Film’ at the 2018 Africa International Film Festival. 

King of Boys, Lara and the Beat, and Light in the Dark – AMAA 2019 AWARD FOR BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN COSTUME DESIGN

This category is a hotly contested one as three Nollywood movies were nominated for it. They are Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys, Tosin Coker’s Lara and the Beat, and Ekene Mekwunye’s Light in the Dark.

King of Boys was released in October 2018 and is currently the fourth highest grossing Nollywood movie of all times. The movie follows the story of Alhaja Eniola Salami, a businesswoman and philanthropist, whose political ambition leads to a chain of events that threatens everything she holds dear.  Kemi Adetiba Visuals was the production company in charge of the movie. 

Lara and the Beat also released in 2018 is a coming of age story of the Giwa sisters, who are rudely awakened out of the privileged bubble they have been living in due to a series of financial scandals. The movie was directed by Tosin Coker and Biola Alabi Media was in charge of production.

Light in the Dark is a 2019 drama that follows the story of a fertility-challenged couple’s battle with external influences. The production design for this movie was handled by Victor Akpan.

Make Room, Gold Statue – AMAA 2019 AWARD FOR BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKEUP

Two Nollywood movies, Make Room and Gold Statue  were nominated for this category. 

Directed by Tade Ogidan, Gold Statue is a comedy that follows the adventure of two young men, Wale (played by Gabriel Afolayan) and Chike (played by Kunle Remi) who are in search of a gold statue believed to have been passed down across generations. 

Which of these movies will win? Our fingers are crossed on this. 

Make Room, The Delivery Boy, King of Boys, Knockout Blessing – AMAA 2019 AWARD FOR BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN VISUAL EFFECT

The contest is getting hotter as the quartet of Something Unusual Studios (The Delivery Boy), Kemi Adetiba Visuals (King of Boys), Native Media Limited (Make Room) and Singularity Media (Knockout Blessing) slug out who will win the award for ‘best achievement in visual effects. May the best team win!
